Hi Jenni,
I took plaquenil with no probs at all. I saw my optician who said that the eye probs are extremely rare but to have checks once a year.

Hello Jenni, My name is Fiona and I have only ever taken Plaquenil since diagnosis 15 years ago. Eye examination once yearly very important, but otherwise for me a good drug for R.A. The eye complications are extremely rare with this form of the drug. Best wishes, Fiona

P.S Jenni, I found that it took 6 months for me to really feel the benefit of Plaquenil as it is a gentle drug and takes patience while it builds up in your system. Fiona

Hi Jenny, I've been taking Plaquenil for some time now and have never had any side effects from it. It is one of the less toxic drugs, but yes,you must make sure you have regular eye tests when taking it,although I was told it's very rare for the drug to cause seroius eye problems.I take two tabs daily but I also take MTX as the Plaquenil on it's own wasn't very helpful. Hi,
I was put on Plaquenil about 3 months after I started MTX and it worked ok for me, took a while as with most meds to kick in. I stopped taking it back in April this year though as I kept forgetting to take them and then when I stopped altogether nothing happened so my consultant was happy to let me stop them, so I just continue with my 25mg of MTX Injection now only. Just make sure you get your eyes checked once a year and any problems or concerns make sure you call your Rheumy nurse.

Hi Jenny,
I have been taken plaquenil for many years now, no probs at all. I have my eyes tested every year and all has been ok. Also taken MTX off and on at the same time.
Good look, hope it works for you. Take care Gill x

Hi Jenny, I too have been on Paquenil / Hydroxochloroquine same drug different name. I have been on it for 3 years with no problems. My optician really does a thorough eye check once a year for me and has it noted I take this drug. It was part of the triple therapy I was given. Really hope you do well on it too. Take care Lorna x

Hi Jenny
I've been on hydroxy for three years and it works well for me. I was on two tablets daily for a few months but started getting side effects so cut it down. I now alternate with two one day and one the next.
I had my annual eye test booked for July but a few days before it was cancelled. I was told the doctor wouldn't be there and I would get another appointment. I waited and waited and finally rang the hospital. After waiting ages I left a message on their appointment answerphone line. In the end I left 6 messages saying I needed an urgent eye test but nothing happened. Finally this week my husband got on the main hospital phone line and got through to the secretary. She said I had missed an appointment and been discharged. He went mad and said I had been told the clinic was cancelled. Anyway I now have an appointment in two weeks. Over 65 the leaflet in the tablets says you should have 6 monthly checks. Some chance!
Best wishes Brenda
